Inception – The Dream is Real

Lately often when I wake up in the morning I can hear a distant sound of foghorn blowing in rhythmic style like in the movie inception but soon I realize it isn’t a dream anymore.  The Dream is real.  Being fat all my life, I had always had a dream that how awesome it would be if I could just loose little bit of weight, but now after losing 41 kg I still sometimes forgot that I am not as Big (remember its polite word for fat) as I used to be and things have changed.  So how did I do that, how did I make this weight loss a reality?  Well a detailed answer involves a diet plan and workout plan but a one line answer is MIND OVER MATTER – THE INCEPTION.

No matter which diet you plan to follow, no matter what workout routine you plan to do, if you are not motivated enough to change your lifestyle it will never work.  It all starts and ends with the mind.  Often motivation is temporary, we feel inspired when we are in our comfort zone, but as soon as we start pushing our body, motivation starts to diminish. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight any time in their life must have experienced this feeling. From last 10 years, every few months I used to feel motivated to lose weight for my wife and even started and followed many different kind of programs for few days or weeks, but once I got back in day-to-day routine, the motivation used to fade away resulting in one long yo-yo diet.  Everybody feels after the birth of my son the motivation was so strong that I finally followed through on my diet plan.  But that’s just partially true.  In fact after my son’s birth for 4 months even though I tried my best to lose weight I just kept on putting on more kilos each passing day.  That’s when my wife did an inception on me.  That was her one final attempt to make the dream real.  How the inception will work is a very personal matter for everyone and it will depend on how the idea can be planted in your head.  For me it was done by my wife and it just finally happened. Yes my biggest strength and my secret ingredient in this incredible transformation was my wife who never gave up on me. Basically the inception of the idea is that your mind feels that what diet plan and fitness plan your body has to follow is the only reality which can exist anymore, everything else is just a dream. This will make you adopt a life style change.  Ask any fitness expert in the world and he or she will always advice you to make a lifestyle change, eat healthy, workout and control your cravings.  So this advice instead of being an advice, if can be planted as a reality in your mind, than the hard and rigorous weight loss journey can be much more fun and easy and it will be just matter of time till you wake up one day and realize that the dream is real.

Grilled Chicken and Couscous Salad

Grilled Chicken and Couscous Salad

Serving Size: 1

Calories per serving: 350

Protein: 40g, Fat: 9g, Carbs: 22g

Ingredients

  • 150 Grams Grilled Chicken
  • 25 Grams Couscous
  • 25 Grams Red Pepper
  • 25 Grams Yellow Pepper
  • 25 Grams Onion
  • 25 Grams Cucumber
  • 10 Grams Black Olives
  • 30 Grams Sweet Corn
  • 1 Tbsp Sambal Olek Paste
  • ½ Tbsp All Purpose Seasoning
  • 15 Grams Feta Cheese
  • 15 Grams Honey Mustard Sauce
  • 15 Grams Sweet Chilli Sauce

Instructions

  1. Boil the couscous for 15 mins or until they are cooked properly.
  2. Cut red pepper, yellow pepper and onion in Julienne style and dice the cucumber.
  3. Combine red pepper, yellow pepper, onion, cucumber, olives, crumbled feta cheese, sweet corn, honey mustard sauce and sweet chilli sauce in a mixing bowl and toss it till they are thoroughly coated with dressing.
  4. Marinate the chicken with sambal olek paste and all-purpose seasoning for 15 minutes and then grill the chicken.
  5. Place the tossed salad in a serving bowl on one side and place the boiled couscous on the other side of the bowl.
  6. Place the grilled chicken on top of the couscous.

Low Calorie Hawaiian Chicken

Chicken is one of my favorite source of protein as it is low on carbs and is very easy to cook.  I got the idea for Hawaiian chicken from the dominoes Hawaiian chicken pizza which is basically pizza with ham and pineapple toppings.  Pineapple is a great ingredient to cook with, in spite of being sweet, 1 cup of pineapple only contains 82 calories and is rich in Vitamin C and Manganese. It is great for digestion, bone strength and overall immunity of the body. This recipe is very low in calorie as it has only  289 calories but very high in protein, making it a perfect lunch.

Low Calorie Hawaiian Chicken

Serving Size: 1

Calories per serving: 289

Protein: 47g, Fat: 2g, Carbs: 17g

Ingredients

  • 200 Grams Chicken Breast
  • 100 Grams Diced Pineapple
  • ½ Tbsp Sambal Olek Sauce
  • ½ Tsp Honey
  • 1 Tsp Lemon Juice
  • ½ Tbsp All-purpose Seasoning
  • ¼ Tsp White Pepper
  • Black Salt as per taste

Instructions

  1. Cut the chicken breast in rough small slices and boil it.
  2. Mix sambal olek, honey, lemon juice, black salt, white pepper, all-purpose seasoning and diced pineapple and marinate the boiled chicken in this mix for 20 minutes.
  3. Grill the chicken till it’s well done and serve it with garnish of grilled pineapple slices

Mission Slimpossible

Ethan Hunt after defeating all the villains in the world has been successful in achieving world peace and IMF has been tasked with boring stuff of surveillance and maintaining peacekeeping task force.  These years of desk job and no running sideways on world’s tallest tower has made Ethan Hunt put on pounds of weight and before he could realize, he was overweight and lethargic. That’s when IMF got alarmed to see one of its best agent not fit for the job when the need would arise. Thus Mr. Hunt gets a phone call one day from Mission Commander.

Mission Commander: “Good morning, Mr. Hunt. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, involves you to lose weight and get back to being fit as soon as possible. As always, should you stop mid-way in your fitness regime and fail to achieve your target this agency will disavow all knowledge of your actions. And Mr. Hunt, I assure you that you might end up look like Tom Cruise if you are successful in your mission. Mr. Hunt, this isn’t mission difficult, it’s mission impossible. “Difficult” should be a walk in the park for you. . This message will self-destruct in five seconds.”

Cue the MI theme song in your head (make sure it’s the Limp bizkit Version) and you are all fired up to start your Fitness Mission.  This might sound very silly to many people but this is how I motivate myself to lose weight.  Well not the exact same scene but anything fun or crazy from pop culture to keep me disciplined and on track.  When you are taking up a herculean task of losing 60 to 70 Kgs of your total body weight, you have to accept that it’s going to be very long, painful, boring and sometimes depressing process.  The only way to keep yourself from not giving up and keep doing what you are doing is to make it fun and interesting in your head.  It has to be some kind of mission or adventure for you, which will make you want to do it every day again and again.  Instead of dreading your morning runs or workout sessions, make it more like a Mont
age from Rocky in your head and you will love it.  Who doesn’t feel inspired listening to that training montage and just get up and start working out. This is the simplest trick to keep yourself disciplined. This has worked so good for me at least, keeping that mind busy in some adventure makes you feel less hungry and more motivated to burn those calories day in and day out.  Motivation and Inspiration are the first steps to losing weight, which I will talk in my next post.gollum But no matter how much motivated you are,in a long and boring weight loss journey often during the sinful ideal time like late night TV watching sessions we end up like a greedy Gollum just raiding the fridge for our precioussss  Carbs and Fats and forgetting all about our fitness regime and motivations.  I am sure almost every person who is trying to lose weight and become fit has at least once felt like Gollum after binging.  It’s a normal human behavior. But if your mind is on a mission, it would stop itself from becoming Gollum and keep you on track.

So before you find your motivation, way before you start your fitness regime, the first thing you need to do is make it a mission, an adventure and a passion you are going to embark upon and if you do that, I can assure you, your franchise will be a box office hit.

Mixed Beans Salad

Beans are great source of fiber and also contains a good amount of protein and are all time favorites ingredients for any type of salad.  This colorful salad combines various beans and egg and is ideal for a post workout meal.

Mixed Beans Salad

Ingredients

  • 1 Boiled Egg
  • 25 Grams Lettuce
  • 35 Grams Tomato
  • 35 Grams Cucumber
  • 50 Grams Kidney Beans
  • 30 Grams Brown Chickpea
  • 35 Grams Sprouted Green Grams
  • 15 Grams Baked Beans
  • 35 Grams Chopped Onions
  • 15 Grams Feta Cheese
  • 15 Grams Honey Mustard Dressing
  • 15 Grams Sweet Chilli Sauce
  • 1 Tsp Lemon Juice
  • ¼ Tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • Chat Masala as per taste
  • Black Salt as per taste

Instructions

  1. Soak Brown Chickpea, Kidney Beans and Sprouted Green Grams overnight.
  2. Boil kidney beans separately and brown chickpeas and green grams together.
  3. Drain the water thoroughly after boiling.
  4. Mix 30 grams of Chopped onion, tomato and cucumber, with brown chickpeas and green grams and remaining 5 grams of onion, tomato and cucumber mix it with kidney beans along with baked beans.
  5. Spread lettuce in a salad bowl and place the kidney bean and baked bean mix the bowl at one side and the brown chickpeas and green grams mix on the other side.
  6. Add the crumbled feta cheese on top of the salad.
  7. Add lemon juice, chat masala, black salt, red chilli powder to the salad.
  8. Also add the honey mustard dressing and sweet chilli sauce to the salad.
  9. Slice the boiled egg and place it on the top of the salad.

The Prologue

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… Oh wait, sorry wrong story.  Let’s try again. Some time ago in this galaxy itself I was a Big Person (That’s polite way to say Fat).  I won’t sugar coat anything on this blog, I don’t want to make it a sob story of how I used to be fat and all that drama attached to it. It sure sucks to be fat and I know it way too well.  I have been a fat person as far as I can remember. Always the fattest person in the class, as every year passed by I kept on putting on more and more weight till I reached my tipping point. At my largest I was 145 Kgs, which was just 5 months ago and today I have managed to get a bit into shape and come down to 101 Kgs.  It is still a long way to go before I can achieve my target but still having lost 40 kgs till now is what I consider a win.

This story is just getting started and I need to reach my target weight of 70 Kgs, which might take some time, but while on this journey I would love to share thoughts, anecdotes, recipes and tips which I followed to reach where I am today and the new ones which I might follow to reach my target.  Actually many people have asked me lately as to what’s my secret of losing weight or what diet or routine I am following.  This blog is to answer all those questions and in process if possible to help anyone who might be benefited from my experience.  Well let me tell you my secret, there is no diet plan or a particular routine which works for a weight loss program.  Any diet or routine you will try by following someone will always fail.  Your weight loss program has to be something which you have to learn and develop yourself and keep it evolving almost on daily basis. You need to constantly read research and learn a lot about eating, working out and almost anything remotely related to fitness.  The key is only you know the strengths and limitation of your own body and how far can you push it. Thus at the onset I would like to make it clear, I am not going to sell any kind of diet plan or work out plan (Actually I might if someone pays me an obscene amount of money) to any of my reader, or promise some miraculous 30 days weight loss program to lose 100 pounds. For that you have millions of other blogs and websites, just google it. What I share or experience might not even be applicable to many and something which I don’t think works on me might work on someone else.  So let’s do this…

Quinoa with Vegetables & Chicken Meat Balls

Protein: 22g, Carbs: 34g, Fat: 7g

Ingredients

  • 70 Grams Chicken
  • 50 Grams Quinoa
  • 35 Grams Green Peas
  • 20 Grams Onion
  • 35 Grams Green Beans
  • 20 Grams Tomato
  • 1 Tsp Olive Oil
  • ¼ Tsp White Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Chopped Garlic
  • 15 Grams boiled Broccoli
  • 3 Tsp Hot Sauce
  • ½ Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
  • ½ Tbsp Sweet Chilli Sauce
  • 5 Grams Honey Mustard Dressing
  • ¼ Tsp Indian Garam Masala
  • ¼ Tsp Coriander Powder
  • ¼ Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ¼ Tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Fresh Coriander
  • ¼ Tsp Black pepper
  • 1 Egg White
  • Salt as per Taste

Instructions

  1. Mince the chicken finely in a food processor or mincer. Add Garam Masala, Coriander powder, Turmeric powder, Red Chilli Powder, fresh Coriander, Black Pepper and egg white to the minced chicken and mix it until they all blend together smoothly.
  2. Make three small size balls of the chicken minced mix and boil it for 10 mins at low heat and keep it aside.
  3. Boil the Quinoa till it is cooked perfect and let it cool down.
  4. Take olive oil in a pan and sauté onions, garlic, green peas, green beans and tomato for two mins. Add salt, white pepper, balsamic vinegar and hot sauce to it and further cook it for 2 mins.
  5. Add the cooled quinoa in the pan and mix it well.
  6. Sauté the chicken balls in a separate pan with a hint of oil till they turn golden brown.
  7. Pour quinoa in a portion bowl and serve the boiled broccoli and chicken balls on the side. Add some salt on top of the broccoli. Garnish the quinoa with sweet chilli sauce and honey mustard and drizzle hot sauce on top of the chicken balls.

Until recently I was never a big fan of salad, but ever since I have changed my eating habit and have been eating clean healthy food, I have come to realise salad is a go to dish for any good summer afternoon.  This Chickpea and Kidney Bean salad is good source of vegetarian protein and also this salad is high in fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Iron.

Chickpea and Kidney Beans Salad

Protein: 12g, Carbs: 36g, Fat: 11g

Ingredients

  • 30 Grams Boiled Chickpea (Kabuli Chana)
  • 30 Grams Kidney Beans (Rajma)
  • 15 Grams Feta Cheese
  • 30 Grams Sweet Corn
  • 30 Grams Diced Mango (If Mango is not available, replace it with Pineapple)
  • 10 Grams Chopped Spring Onion
  • 15 Grams Chopped Tomato
  • 15 Grams Black Olive
  • 20 Grams Chopped Onion
  • 15 Grams Hot Sauce
  • 15 Grams Honey Mustard Dressing
  • 15 Grams Sweet Onion Sauce

Instructions

  1. Combine Chickpea, Kidney Beans, Sweet Corn, Mango, spring onion, Tomato and Onions in a salad bowl.
  2. Drizzle Hot Sauce, Honey Mustard Dressing and Sweet Onion Sauce in the salad bowl.
  3. Crumble Feta Cheese into chunks and sprinkle it over the salad.
  4. Toss the salad until all the ingredients are thoroughly coated in the dressing.

Low Calorie Kung Pao chicken

This is my low calorie version of Kung Pao Chicken. This might not be the most authentic of the recipe, but it sure is one of the healthiest versions of Kung Pao Chicken and helps in loosing weight in a delicious way.

Low Calorie Kung Pao chicken

Low Calorie Kung Pao chicken

Protien: 21.8g, Carbs: 19.9g Fat: 19.7g

Ingredients

  • 200 Grams Diced Chicken
  • 150 Grams Green Beans
  • 1 Tsp Sesame Oil
  • 1 Tsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tsp Green Chilli Sauce
  • 1 Tsp Red Chilli Sauce
  • 1 Tsp Honey
  • ½ Tsp White Sesame Seeds
  • 1 Tbsp Garlic
  • 12 Grams Peanuts
  • ¼ Tsp White Pepper
  • Salt as per Taste

Instructions

  1. Dice and boil the chicken and keep it aside.
  2. Dice and boil green beans and after boiling soak it in cold water for 5 mins to get the crispy texture.
  3. Mix all the wet ingredients in a bowl until it blends together as a sauce.
  4. Heat the sesame oil in a pan and add garlic in the pan and sauté it till golden brown.
  5. Add boiled green beans and chicken to the pan and sauté it further for two mins.
  6. Add the mixed wet ingredients sauce to the pan and add salt and pepper to it and cook it all at a low heat.
  7. Transfer the ingredients in the pan to a serving dish and add White sesame seeds and peanuts on the top.

Hot Chicken with Cauliflower Mash

Potato Mash and Chicken is a very delicious combination, but Potato Mash is very high in Carbohydrates and also contains loads of calories which are not good for weight loss.  However Cauliflower Mash has the same creamy yumminess and also its very low in both carbohydrates and calories.  Pair it with a yummy hot chicken and you have a delicious dish full of Proteins, Vitamins and Minerals.

Hot Chicken with Cauliflower Mash

Protein: 30g Carbohydrates: 22g Fats: 11g

Ingredients

  • 200 Grams Cauliflower
  • 70 Grams Chicken
  • 10 Grams Cream Cheese
  • 10 Grams Feta Cheese
  • 1 Tsp Olive Oil
  • ¼ Tsp White Pepper
  • 1 Tsp Chopped Garlic
  • 35 Grams Green Peas
  • ½ Tbsp Hot Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Sweet Onion Sauce
  • Salt as per taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the Cauliflower for around 8-10 minutes until it becomes tender and drain the water. Keep it in bowl full of room temperature water for it to cool down for about 5 minutes.
  2. Now blend the boiled cauliflower in a food processor or a hand blender till it gets a smooth texture.
  3. Add salt, some white pepper, cream cheese, feta cheese and Green Peas in the cauliflower mash and mix it gently with the mash till all the ingredients blends with the mash and keep it aside.
  4. Dice the chicken into small pieces and boil it.
  5. Heat the olive oil in a pan and sauté the garlic till golden brown and add the boiled chicken to the pan and sauté it for 30-40 seconds more.
  6. Add hot sauce, sweet onion sauce, salt & remaining white pepper in the pan and cook it with chicken on a low heat.
  7. Spread the cauliflower mash in a serving dish and serve the chicken on top of the mash.
